Getting Adequate Protein on a Vegan Diet

Updated: Dec 23, 2021

How to keep up protein intake if you are on a vegan diet? Plant-based diets don’t have to be plain and boring. However, there are many nutritional alternatives for you to reinvent dishes and spice up your meal!

Afterglow by Anglow - Vegan Restaurant in Singapore

Afterglow by Anglow is one of the best vegan restaurants in town. Contrary to the common misconception that vegan food is repetitive, we were spoilt for choice at this hipster-looking yet cosy restaurant at Keong Saik Road. The talented team at Afterglow managed to knock our socks off with an extensive menu offering a myriad of vegan dishes, each elevated with an interesting twist in the flavour and texture. We ended up ordering the Mixed Mushroom Rice Bowl, Sweet Potato Hash and Cuban Burger for 2 to share.

Mixed Mushroom Rice Bowl

Their Mixed Mushroom Rice Bowl consists of an assortment of mushrooms, tomatoes, eggplant, edamame beans, carrots and pineapples, drizzled with cauliflower gravy and salsa.

Sweet Potato Hash

This lightly spiced dish packed quite a punch, and it is a must to try if you are a sweet potato enthusiast. It offers a hearty portion of baked sweet potatoes, seasonal vegetables and mushrooms. Sweet potatoes are considered the healthier choice compared to normal potatoes because of their high fiber and vitamin contents and lower Glycemic Index (lower GI means they will not spike your blood sugar as much).

Cuban Burger

Lastly, the Cuban Burger, accompanied by a side of mac and cheese baked cauliflower bites, is stacked with a cuban 3 bean patty (made with black bean, kidney bean and butter bean), cucumber slices, purple cabbage slaw, guacamole, tomato salsa, and romaine.

In general, their food has generous portions - we ordered too much for 2 pax and had to takeaway. It was a pleasant experience dining in at this vegan restaurant for the first time, and the lovely staff has definitely set the bar high for our subsequent visits!

A common concern about plant-based diets will be the lack of protein. This may result in an array of nutritional problems, despite the environmental benefits it offers since you are able to reduce your carbon footprint. For regular gym goers, protein is important especially after a workout session. But do not fret! With rapid advancements and innovations in food tech over the years, vegan protein is now one of the biggest trends in the industry. It provides an alternate option for individuals to meet the recommended daily protein intake.
